  • I am shocked and appalled by the way I was treated today. In my 16 years volunteering for animal related non profits I have never had such a hateful experience. I have found myself in a desperate situation seeking help and advice from other cat rescues and her response has scarred me for life. My cat diabetic cat of 17 years has been pooping all over my house for the past few months. Vet visits show nothing wrong with his stomach or bowels. He only poops in the floor when we are asleep or not home. I know for a fact it his him and not another cat, I have cameras. He is doing it deliberately, not accidently, he is not incontinent. The final straw came when he was good for 5 days. On the night of the 5th day I dumped the litter box, which is a humongous tote by the way, and sprayed the inside of it clean. Then, only 2 hours later, he pooped in the floor. I looked in the litter box and it was empty, no other cat had even used it yet. This proved to me that the cleanliness of the litter box is not the issue. After talking to my vet and the volunteers I work with, they all suggested I try to find him a permanent senior cat living facility. With a heavy heart, and after a lot of research, I decided to start calling places. I was hoping to find one close enough that I could volunteer there at least once a month so I could visit him. One of the kind women I called gave me the contact information of Kathy Deptola. She answered the phone in an already rude tone. That's fine, maybe she had a rough morning, maybe she didn't sleep last night, I don't judge. When I tried to explain to her my situation, she cut me off several times and then started YELLING AT ME. Telling me I WAS BEING CRUEL for trying to find him a retirement home and to JUST PICK UP THE POOP. I tried to backtrack and re-explain so that she would understand what kind of person I am, I'm not just some rando trying to dump their elderly cat. But she wouldn't have it, and then proceeded to brag about her 4 diabetic cats and 1 with IBD who poop all over her house and that she's happy to clean it up. What a psychotic thing to be proud of. I just hung up after that and cried half the day. All she had to do was say, no we don't have any space and I don't know anyone else who can help you. There was no reason for her to degrade me and talk to me like I'm selfish and care nothing about my cat. I record all of my phone conversations if there's any question about how this went down. Anyone trying to find a retirement home for their animal is being THE OPPOSITE OF CRUEL. Any regular person would've put this cat down years ago. Some of these places require upwards of $1,000 just to take the animal and then a $100 monthly hospice fee. Money is not an issue. The issue the quality of life for my cat and everyone in the house he is pooping in. Then she GOES ON FACEBOOK AND MAKES A POST ABOUT ME! With all the comments saying things like, don't you just hate people like that, 17 years and they just want to throw the cat away, hope someone puts that person in a home ect. I am disgusted. I thought only children and teens were internet trolls. This woman clearly has mental disorder beyond the realms toxoplasmosis. As a fellow volunteer and foster I know what it's like to speak to the public about their animals. I've had people come to me with sob stories, some polite and some not, and I always do my best educate and provide them with other resources if my Humane Society is unable to take their animal. I've been cussed out and told that their animal is going to die because I wouldn't take it. But even in those situations I stay polite. Because when I am talking to them, I am the face of the organization. I am the one representing the Humane Society and I would never do anything to tarnish their name. I'm still in disbelief that she would treat me this way. Every organization and veterinarian I have contact with has been told the situation and they have blacklisted her.
