The Grateful Dog Animal Rescue - Alfred Pet Shelter

The Grateful Dog Animal Rescue

The Grateful Dog Rescue is a non-profit, no kill, all volunteer dog rescue dedicated to saving the lives of dogs left in high kill shelters, and local surrenders of owners who no longer want their dogs. We mainly pull southern dogs who are at risk for euthanasia. It is our mission to focus on the adult dogs who stand less of a chance since puppies are in such high demand. We believe every shelter dog deserves a chance to be Grateful, and though we can't save them all, we do everything we can to make a dent in getting homeless dogs off of the streets and out of the shelter.

Adoption Process

Step 1: Fill out an adoption application. Please be DETAILED. We will not respond to an incomplete application lacking of important details. Please also be patient as we are a small organization consisting of dedicated and dog loving volunteers who are unpaid, working on their free time to save lives and complete families. It can take up to 3-5 days to receive an update on your application. Once your application has started review, a representative will reach out to you regarding the process and required next steps. PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE A $25 FEE FOR ALL APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED. YOU MUST COPY AND PASTE YOUR PAYMENT CONFIRMATION INTO THE APPLICATION FOR CONSIDERATION. THE $25 FEE IS CONSIDERED A DONATION BUT WILL COME OFF OF THE TOTAL COST OF ADOPTION IF APPROVED. Step 2: Reference Checks & Home Visit. This is a vital step to our process. We will check 3 non-family references, as well as a veterinary reference. Once this step is completed, we will move forward with the virtual tour home visit. Step 3: Collect Drivers Licenses of Adopters. We will keep the drivers licenses of both the main adopter, as well as any co-adopters, if applicable. Step 4: Communicate with Foster & Set up a Meet and Greet. Once you are approved to adopt, and we have completed the above steps, we will then put you in touch with the foster family of the dog you are interested in adopting. Step 5: ADOPT! Once you have communicated with the foster family and you have set up a meet and greet, it is important to remember that you are expected to adopt on the day of the meet and greet. When we receive confirmation of a meet and greet, we will send along the adoption paperwork, which is signed electronically and must be filled out before the dog leaves the fosters possession.

  • I give this place zero stars. A friend adopted a sweet dog, Scarlett, from this place. Two weeks later she was dead from multiple tumors in her lungs and spleen. We met in a parking lot,the person knew nothing about Scarlett, my friend adopted her anyway. Kaitlyn the rescue person, would not answer any txts, calls, emails from my friend when problems arose. When Scarlett was rushed to hospital in Scarborough me Kaitlyn told my friend not to call her personal phone and did not respond to any messages. Scarlett was put to sleep only two weeks after my friend adopted her. There was no offer of a refund even though my friend spent thousands of dollars to try to get sweet Scarlett better. It was a nightmare. Don't ever ever adopt from this dreadful uncaring woman. Scarlett was the dearest dog who never had a chance. At least she had two weeks of love and caring with my friend.

  • my husband and I adopted our sweet dog 11 years ago. Frankie has been our great fiend and love this entire time; Garland, my husband passed away recently. Frankie slept with him until the last few days, we had a hospital bed brought in and it was a bit too high and my sweet Garland ,too weak for Frankie to lie with him. We lost Garland in December and will be forwarding a check for $5000.00 as soon as we can, probably 4 weeks from now. Iam writing to let you know how much joy Frankie continues to bring and this small amount of money will be sent to Grateful Dog Rescue to acknowledge how truly wonderful you are for your service. No words can express how much this sweet dog has been here through everything and now some days he is the only reason I have to get up and keep going. Thank you so much and God bless you all. Patrick
