Yuba County Animal Care Services is the worst shelter I have ever been to. They adopt out animals that are sick and lie about the health of the animal. I adopted a kitten from this shelter back n January, who had no name, and was suffering from an upper respiratory disease that was contracted at this shelter. The secretary who works at the front office admitted that the cat had not been properly vaccinated upon intake because they alleged the cat was "too difficult to handle". (Keep in mind, when I got this kitten she was not even 6 pounds and has never shown any signs of aggression.) This shelter has a contract with Davies Hospital for spaying, and we went there after adopting this kitten to uphold our contract agreement. Upon getting examined, the vet told us that this kitten was very sick and unsafe to perform a spay. We called the shelter and the secretary was completely unprofessional and rude. She told us that we were bound by the agreement and that we could take the cat back and that was our only option. (Also, remember that they had already breached their end of the contract because they lied about the animal's health and vaccination status.) The secretary was accusatory, rude, and completely unprofessional. After investigating more, we realized that the documentation the shelter was keeping was all wrong. (For example, on her vaccination papers, they checked the box that said the cat had received the dog vaccine.) There were administrative errors, and every person that we talked to at this shelter gave us a different answer as to what needed to happen next. We were finally given the contact information of the manager of this shelter. It took her over a week to respond to emails and phone calls. She was conveniently always out of her office. She returned our call and assured us that they had no idea about the cat's illness and that she would NEVER adopt out a sick animal. Apparently, they have a vet on staff who visits every week and checks the animals. My kitten was there for over a month (i.e. 4 vet visits) and apparently, they never caught this sickness that she had. My vet bills are over $1,500 and the shelter, nor the county is paying for any of it. The manager said they didn't have the resources even though she fully acknowledged that this kitten was a slip in quality control. The county denied our claim for damages with no explanation and no way to appeal. As much as I love animals and would love to save every single cat that is in that shelter, I will never step foot in there again. They will do this again. More animals will suffer. And more people will be screwed out of money. Do not go here, they are a lousy excuse for a shelter. They do not care for their animals and are just trying to cover their own asses.
